Description
Straordinarie (Extraordinary) celebrates the lives of ten extraordinary nurses who defied conventions and changed history with their courage and dedication.
In these pages you will meet Irena Sendler, who during the Holocaust saved over 2,500 children from the Warsaw ghetto, risking everything to give them freedom and a new life. Alongside her is Florence Nightingale, the “Lady with the Lamp,” who in Crimea transformed nursing into a modern science and saved thousands of lives with her revolutionary ideas. And then there is Mary Jane Seacole, the Jamaican entrepreneur and nurse who, with her talent and dedication, broke racial barriers by caring for wounded soldiers on the battlefield.
Joining these women is Dorothea Dix, who fought to bring dignity and assistance to psychiatric patients, bringing light to America’s asylums and prisons. With her is Mary Breckinridge, founder of the Frontier Nursing Service, who brought healthcare to the remote Appalachian Mountains, becoming a symbol of hope in rural communities. Margaret Sanger forever changed women’s health: a pioneer in women’s rights, she fought for access to contraception and founded Planned Parenthood.
In the field of nursing education, Virginia Henderson gave the world a new definition of nursing as an art of supporting autonomy, while Helen Fairchild, a trench nurse, sacrificed her life during World War I, working under relentless bombardments and chemical attacks. Elvira Davila Ortiz, a pioneer in Colombia, brought essential healthcare to the most challenging areas, transforming South America’s healthcare system, while Italy’s Marisa Cantarelli innovated nursing education with a new model centered on competence and humanity.
The illustrations of Francesco Smeragliuolo, a young illustrator and nurse, bring these biographies to life with sensitivity and strength. Humbly accepting the challenge of representing stories of such significance, Francesco succeeded in capturing the essence of each of these legendary figures, making the graphic novel a visually and emotionally moving work. Every page of Straordinarie is a visual and emotional tribute to these indomitable women, whose sacrifices and achievements have left an indelible mark on history. This graphic novel is not just a story, but a celebration of the courage and passion of those who chose to serve humanity. Let yourself be inspired by their stories and discover what it truly means to care for others.
The graphic novel will be available for pre-order until November 20, 2024, and will be shipped starting from December 2, 2024, according to the shipping option chosen at checkout.
